Travel Guide: Weekend in NY

Recently, Ryan and I decided to make a quick stopover in New York (we were en route home from Bermuda) and spend the weekend – we’ve both been many times, but never together so thought it would be fun. It sure was, and below are some fail-proof things to hit up if you’re visiting NY for just a short 48 hours.

Firstly, I want to give a special shout out to the Refinery Hotel. I have stayed at several really nice spots in NY, and now I don’t think I’ll ever stay anywhere else. The whole building is décor goals, the rooms are VERY spacious by NY standards (+ super high ceilings!), the location is very central and it has a great rooftop and restaurant on site.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to New York without indulging in some delicious food so I recommend trying Eataly, Pietro Nolita or Nomo Soho Kitchen to get started (all faves and provide great photo ops as well). Reservations are your friends!

Although, as mentioned, we had both been to the city before, Ryan had never done the Empire State Building and I hadn’t been in a very long time so we made the trek to the top of the rock. The views are stunning and it’s a fun and quick touristy photo op. We also took a walk in Central Park, which is gorgeous any time of year btw, and got some street meat lol (had to).

For shopping, we spent most of our time on Broadway and 5th Avenue which has pretty much everything you need. I always try to focus on stores that normally require (overpriced) shipping to Canada or that we can’t get at all. Think boutiques, Target, Mango, Madewell, etc. Even though the exchange is not great right now, if you’re a fellow Canadian it’s still better than paying duties. I also stopped into BHLDN for some wedding perusing. You can shop everything I actually bought here.

Lastly, hitting up the flat iron building for some photos, or meat packing district for a drink are always fun stops. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been to a sporting event in NY, so if next time I’m there in season, that will be a stop. It’s also on my list to visit during the holidays and skate at rockerfeller so while it won’t be this year (we’ll be on our honeymoon), perhaps next.

Have I mentioned any of your fave spots in New York? Leave me a comment with your must-do’s for a 48 hour visit, x.
